We have successfully completed a number of projects of note with some of the largest organisations in the world. We are fast developing a reputation in Enterprise Systems Integration implementations. Our latest project involves the use of straight-through techniques to build a web-based workflow system for the management of real-time gross settlement instructions for financial institutions. This system employs screen-scraped terminal-based interfaces to the central bank’s RENTAS system. It is being deployed at a foreign MNC bank.

With our vast stockbroking background, our experience also spans in the development of comprehensive
Nominees and Custodian (NC) multi-user systems that automates the operations of managing securities pledged with a Nominees & Custodian and its resulting corporate action entitlements. NC services are generally neglected due to its low revenues but serves an important complimentary service to the underlying business of stockbroking and is a necessary evil. From our experience with dealing with past back office systems (particularly ones managing huge clients databases), we are also experienced in the development of comprehensive client information management systems. We also actively participated in the building of an account management system, i.e., a multi-user system with integrated suites of functionalities providing single view of clients for a local stockbroker. This system supported the maintenance and managing of clients personal details, business accounts and BMD's depository account (CDS) particulars. It was also an automated system that deployed straight-through processing concepts (STP) in performing CDS account management functionalities with BMD's CDS system.

We were engaged initially to provide Systems Engineering support for a foreign multinational Oil Exploration/Retail company on the newly deployed Tandem mainframe computer. This included providing expert knowledge in the areas of application installation, networking, and systems setup. The engagement led into a number of short-term projects to develop subsystems to surround the core Card Management Software, including:

PIN generation and mailing interfaces to the proprietary algorithm hosted on the Shell-specific Racal Host Security Module, a hardware-based encryption system.
Direct Debit interface file for dealer remuneration.
BonusLink loyalty points interface.
TACL-based scripts for automated systems operations & management.
Other miscellaneous Tandem-based programs.

This is a continuing business relationship.

In 1997, we were engaged to provide Systems and Architecture Design assistance to the primary vendor responsible for a middleware implementation project at a local stock exchange. In this engagement, we led the Technical Design of the re-development of the Equity Trading System, SCORE, to improve on its already impressive performance and availability characteristics. This project involved the re-design of the two-tiered terminal-based architecture to one of a multi-tiered host-to-host interface using a message-oriented middleware as the platform. Key issues considered were performance, scalability, and reliability. As part of our deliverable, we prepared a Design Report and led a Design Review presentation of the overall design in the United States with the manufacturer of the middleware software.

An internal two year effort in studying the possibility of performing a straight-through processing interface for a foreign MNC Bank’s Worldwide Securities’ business led to the conclusion that is was difficult, if not impossible, to implement such a system. However, in late 1997, we were invited to bid for, and successfully obtained the engagement to provide a total software and hardware solution to allow the Bank’s existing OS/390 mainframe- and Windows NT-based applications to access the Malaysian Central Depository’s CDS application. The custody application, residing on the mainframe, was responsible for the secure receipts and confirmation of instructions for the transfer of Malaysian equities held in the CDS. To reduce risk, and to improve the Bank’s service levels to their often very large institutional clients, these instructions were to be transmitted to the CDS without manual intervention.

To compound an already difficult task, the Bank also dictated that the straight-through processing enhancement must be achieved WITHOUT changing the Bank’s existing software. The project was successfully delivered, meeting all requirements and potentially allowed the Bank to reduce the staffing requirements to effect even larger number of transactions.

This solution has been deployed at two other major foreign Custodian banks in Malaysia with implementations over ODBC, batched files, and online messaging through IBM ® MQ Series middleware.

We thrive on projects that require an aggressive implementation approach. We were called in to deliver an IBM OS/390 mainframe down-sizing project for a decades-old CICS/VSAM application for a large oil company. Due to the inability of another organisation to deliver the project, we took up the challenge to study, develop, test, train, and deploy this system, responsible for about RM4 million in billings monthly, within 6 elapsed weeks. This project was supposed to have taken the other party approximately 4 months to do. In this project, the existing mainframe-based database was offloaded into a series of data files that were converted into a Microsoft SQL Server database. The data was validated, cleansed, and re-designed to meet new criteria for processing. The system consisted of 40+ screens, 15+ reports & billing documents, and separate host-interfaces to a SAP R/3 application, and a card management system. The total dumb-terminal interface, prevalent in a mainframe application, was revamped, and re-hosted on graphical user-interface PCs.This Client/Server configuration now runs more efficiently, reducing the time for billing. And at the same time, it offered a much easier and intuitive interface for customer and dealer management, pricing-tax-duty management, and a significant reduction in costs (and the rise in productivity) in performing the same business functions as before.
